Large assembly halls are equipped with a special system of additional sound amplification. This is necessary to ensure unique sound input and transmission at any point. There are assembly halls where natural sound is enough, for example, in schools or small cultural centers, such premises are small.
The first and important parameter that is taken into account in acoustic design is the area of the potential assembly hall. When it is small, there is no need. The second significant factor is the number of spectators. A large number of visitors will distort natural vibrations, will not allow echo to form, and will create other interference that deforms the sound.
What is acoustic design of an assembly hall?
This involves determining the ratio of the total volume of the room, its shape, internal contours and the number of regular visitors. Based on the results, documentation is generated, which takes into account such parameters as: the volume of the room, its geometric shape, the outline of the surfaces, obstacles that prevent the formation of an echo and other points.
With proper design, it is possible to achieve ideal distribution of reflected sound and obtain sufficient diffusion of the sound field. Sound inspection of the assembly hall is not a recommendation or a wish of the owners, it is a requirement approved by law. The fact is that the degree of soundproofing and the quality of noise insulation can directly affect the operation of the facility in the future. The better the music sounds in the assembly hall or the voices of the performers, the more effectively the room will be used.
The main tasks in the sound design of the assembly hall?
Since the assembly hall is always a closed room, after the noise or sound source ceases to function, those in the hall pick up musical or conversational elements after some time. This phenomenon is explained by the fact that the SPL formed at the calculated point is projected as direct sound energy and the energy of sound waves reflected from surfaces. Accordingly, reverberation appears - the effect of reducing sound energy. A number of tasks are set before the acoustic design of the assembly hall:
reducing the reverberation time;
transmission of pure sound without sound amplification to the rear areas of the assembly hall;
determining the noise level with the identification of its sources, classification and main characteristics;
searching for optimal instruments that would transmit sound through the air field without the effect of echo and sound vibrations;
selection of practical elements affecting the hum level and their use in accordance with established technical standards.
Most stages of acoustic design of the assembly hall are carried out using digital technologies, but the final result and the effectiveness of all activities depend on the initial stage (collection and analysis of initial data).
What stages are there?
The initial stage of acoustic design of the assembly hall, like any other structure, is in working with the architectural project, actual areas, geometric shape, capacity of the hall and its cascading. If all information on architectural and technical aspects has been processed, then the acoustic design of the assembly hall goes into specific stages:
use of geometric or ray sound reflectors and construction of their projections;
determination of the minimum, recommended and maximum reverberation time;
direct calculation of the reverberation time based on its area and the number of visitors;
analysis and analysis of the design, materials and structures (furniture or equipment) for their sound absorption;
checking the intelligibility of speech in the hall using only natural acoustics.

Acoustic design of assembly halls is a multi-level system that can give a head start even to construction design and architectural solutions. Incorrect acoustic design will result in the sound being maximally dissipated in the first rows, echoing in the middle of the assembly hall, and background noise with interference and hum in the last rows.
Acoustic characteristics of assembly halls
In order to achieve ideal sound transmission, the absence of hums and other defects, it is necessary to create a high-quality acoustic project. When it comes to acoustic design of assembly halls, there are 2 main types of design:
Natural acoustics. Visitors hear the real sound of voices or instruments, but its quality is affected by the overall acoustics of the room. This type is possible in rooms designed for up to 3,000 people.
Mixed acoustics. Here, a combination of a natural sound system, sound amplification and external sound insulation occurs. This formula is used in rooms with a capacity of up to 4,500 people.
There is also completely artificial acoustics, but it is used more in large concert halls than in a school or university assembly hall. There are several characteristics that play a key role in the design of an assembly hall:
hall volume;
time of delay of the first reflections from the ceiling;
radius of direct sound;
presence or absence of theatrical echo;
radius of the sound field;
total number of seats in the hall;
sound absorption of objects.
Taking into account all these indicators, it is possible to create the correct acoustic calculation and design of the assembly hall.
After the completion of the acoustic design of the assembly hall, the customer receives a corresponding project and acoustic passport, which reflects the current data on the level of noise insulation, sound insulation and reverberation.
