Theatre is a form of hall for “live” performances, rehearsals of performances, exchange of attention and energy between actors and audience, and not just a space for watching or listening to a work of a famous author.
Designing theatres is very important for the correct delivery of the expressiveness of staged plays, musical performances, all kinds of lectures and performances. Although some forms are better suited to certain types of performance, there is no ideal size or shape of a theatre. The choice of the best shape and scale depends on the immediate functional purpose, the size of the required production and the number of audiences in the hall.
What is theater design?
Design means the reconstruction of existing theater halls or the creation of a new technologically equipped hall, stage or the entire theater complex, including the foyer, vestibule, backstage areas and other important rooms. When designing a theater, it is important to take a comprehensive approach to solving issues related to:
· safety requirements;
· operational solutions;
· creating comfortable conditions for each spectator and actors;
· installing the right lighting and sound equipment;
· installing the stage and multi-passage layout;
· installing additional equipment and theater items.
The tasks of the company that is engaged in design do not end with performing calculations and developing an entire project, drawing up recommendations. The entire reconstruction must be controlled in matters of installing stage scenery, planning the location of the continental passage for seating spectators, equipping high-quality sound and light.
Stages of Theatre Design
General design of the auditorium with the type of performance and the number of spectators. The auditorium is the part of the theatre where the spectators are seated during the performance. The area includes the lobby, cloakroom, refreshment area, ticket office and toilet. The following stages can be called basic:
1. At the initial stage, it is important to calculate the total number of seats and design the most functional room.
2. Stage of designing the acoustics of the theatre. In large areas, it is very important to take care of good sound quality, for this purpose the reconstruction plan may include the installation of additional sound amplification equipment.
3. Stage of designing the mechanics of the stage. As an architectural feature, the stage may consist of a platform or a series of platforms. In some cases, they may be temporary or adjustable.
4. Stage of designing the aisles and spectator seats. With careful planning, the location of the correct aisle can accommodate more seats in the same space.
5. Designing the lighting systems (main and emergency).
Designing a modern theater should be entrusted to a reliable contractor who has already dealt with this issue, where specialists with good experience work. The contractor will be required to draw up a draft plan.
Plans can be of different types: architectural, which involves preparing a drawing, and constructive, where a comprehensive analysis of all indicators and factors occurs to create a design solution. It is better to choose the customer company that controls the implementation of the plan at each stage with an engineer visiting the site.
What may be required when designing a theater?
During the work, it is important to consider not only the order of work with different areas of the hall, but also to design the audience seats and the stage. It is important not to forget about the installation of special equipment and building elements, namely:
1. Designing a sound amplification system - installation of additional sound amplification equipment. The sound amplification system includes microphones, a sound console, which is usually located with the sound engineer, systems for switching sound signals, as well as sound processing equipment (GOST 27751-2014).
2. Stage lighting consists of the lighting part of the theater, a control system for lighting devices and an electrical part, which must be installed according to fire safety standards. The hall can be equipped with theatrical projection devices, luminescence on the stage, spotlights (GOST R 54350-2015).
3. Stage equipment - elements that can be used during mass events, such as podiums, stands, slats and much more (GOST 25528-82).
4. Stage mechanics - elements that can be used to create various complex details on stage (appearance and disappearance, lifting an artist) (GOST 25528-82).
5. Curtain as a technical device and a decorative element (GOST 27751-2014 and GOST R 50810-95).
6. Seating in the auditorium - single and sectional (GOST 16855-91).
Theater design standards are regulated by the set of rules for the design of theater and entertainment buildings. The set of rules was approved by the Ministry of Construction of the Russian Federation on 08/29/2017. The code uses more than 40 references to regulatory documents GOSTs, SP and SanPiN.
